Let’s face it, there are some diabolical moments of something that every Pakistani encounters: LOAD-SHEDDING!

As sweat trickles down like beads on your face, and you cannot have your favorite t-shirt ironed, your favorite frozen food not thawed properly without a microwave oven or play your highly favorite video game on an electric device – there are innumerable other detrimental effects of not having the facility of electricity, and you feel HIGHLY agitated.

In order to endure boredom during such execrable hours, I’ve concocted a list of 12 things to do:

1. READ A “REAL” BOOK:

As you flip through every page with your fingers, the publishing companies might be grateful to you, for they chop down millions or perhaps trillions of trees to give you this product at hand. Candles or flashlights can aid your reading efforts. And contrary to popular belief, you won’t do permanent damage to your eyes. Plus, you’ll get more knowledgeable, will delve deep into another unimaginable world that becomes imaginable, will enhance your vocabulary to a top-notch standard (helpful for your standardized tests and or other relevant aspects of life), and will give your mind the ”REAL” exercise that it long strove for.

2. SOCIALIZE:

The computers may not work but phone lines do. Pick up the phone and call or text a loved one.

3. TAKE A NAP:

As your brain is an extraordinary organ, the master of your body, it works all the time along with our body –  both of them really do need some time to rest. Your brain needs a break. If you are at home, no one will care, so go and cuddle yourself in soft covers for a salubrious slumber that your mind and body long yearned for. If you are at work, the boss won’t be able to see you in the dark. Just don’t snore.

4. WALK, EXERCISE OR RIDE A BIKE:

Take a walk, bike ride, or exercise! Your neck, back, and posture will be surprised, but will thank you. A power outage is probably a sign telling you to get off your chair and out into the open.

5. RAID THE REFRIGERATOR:

You were already waiting for the electricity to turn back, so that you could more easily defrost your ‘frozen food’ stuck in your refrigerator in a microwave oven. But unfortunately, it turns out that the food that is present in the refrigerator is waiting to be used, regardless of available electricity – so fry or cook or heat it up in some pan on the stove before it expires! Use it or lose it!

6. FAMILY & FRIENDS TIME:

Power outage is a golden opportunity to spend some quality time with your family and friends. Discuss with them the current issues of Pakistan or the world in general, take advice on matters of concern, have someone reconcile with the other person for an olive branch to settle a disagreement or a quarrel.

8. TIME FOR PETS:

This is an awesome time for playing, feeding or taking your pet animals for a walk outdoors or indoors (if you have some temporary light source available). Animals crave for your compassion!

9. EXPLORE MOTHER NATURE AND ITS GIFTS:

If it’s daytime, then you’re in for a surprise! Go out there and soak your skin in the sun to accumulate all that essential vitamin D that your body requires. However, don’t forget to apply some good SPF40 sunscreen before exposing yourself! Have a look around the flowers in your garden or stroll through a park nearby to thank God for all the countless gifts He has blessed us with. Smell roses or any other flower that you love the fragrance of! Jump into the secret beauties of exotic landscapes all around you!

10. WRITE A LETTER AND A DIARY:

Writing is, indeed, a very creative endeavour that has many boons in one’s life. You can either compose your loving informal letters to your dear ones dwelling faraway to please them – or write an entry of yet another day of your precious life in your Personal Diary to have a therapeutic effect on you, to make you feel all the more positive; and to brush up your writing skills.

11. LISTEN TO MUSIC:

Whether you prefer the radio, your Ipod, MP3 or any other tech gadget to be a means of musical comfort to your ears – listening to music would try to divert your attention from the crisis scenario at sight. Plus, you could get your creative mental powers flowing in because of your favorite songs! So tune in your headphones and enjoy right away!

12. PLAY WITH A DECK OF CARDS OR ANY OTHER CARD GAME:

Yes, if you have children or little kids in your abode; now’s the most opportune time to relish every minute with them! Or if you want, you can always have a solitary play with your cards or any other alternate medium. I suggest playing “SCRABBLE” with little kids to improve their semantic memory and to challenge them to rack their brains up to the correct answer or LUDO. For adults, I would advise playing “Monopoly” or any other challenging game that you indulge in!
